The 1960s Star Who Said Meeting Elvis Changed Her Life Forever

Italian singer Rita Pavone became one of the biggest music stars in Italy during the 1960s, though many American audiences may not know her name. Born in Turin on August 23, 1945, Pavone grew up in a working-class family and began singing at student parties and local bars at a young age. Her life changed in 1962 when she entered a major talent competition called the “Rally of the Unknown.”

More than 20,000 aspiring performers participated, but Pavone won the contest and quickly became a star. Her first album, featuring the hit song La Partita di Pallone, sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Pavone soon gained international attention and performed on The Ed Sullivan Show. She also shared stages with famous artists such as Diana Ross, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tom Jones.

One of the most memorable moments of her career happened in Nashville, where she unexpectedly met her idol Elvis Presley while recording music. Despite his manager’s reluctance, Elvis greeted her warmly, gave her a kiss, and even presented her with a signed painting.

Although Pavone never achieved the same level of fame in the United States, she remained a beloved star in Italy and continued performing for decades. Today, the 80-year-old singer lives in Switzerland with her husband, Teddy Reno, reflecting on a remarkable career.
