‘Sanford and Son’ Star Passed Away At Age 79

Grady Demond Wilson, best known for portraying Lamont Sanford on NBC’s iconic sitcom Sanford and Son, has died at the age of 79. His performance as the devoted, level-headed son of Fred Sanford made him a beloved television figure.

Wilson’s son, Demond Wilson Jr., confirmed that the actor was pronounced dead Friday morning at his home in Palm Springs. He died from complications related to cancer, though the specific type was not disclosed.

“I loved him. He was a great man,” his son said, remembering a father whose influence extended far beyond television.

Born October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia, Wilson was raised in New York City, where he developed an early passion for acting. Before entering entertainment, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was wounded in combat, later receiving an honorable discharge.

After returning home, Wilson studied acting at the American Drama Studio in New York. His dedication paid off in 1972 when he was cast opposite Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son.

The chemistry between Wilson and Foxx became the heart of the show, helping make it one of the most successful sitcoms of the 1970s. Wilson remained with the series throughout its original run until 1977 and later appeared in its brief revival.

Following the show, Wilson continued working in television, appearing on series such as The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The New Odd Couple, and Girlfriends. Over time, however, his focus shifted away from acting.

In the 1980s, Wilson became a born-again Christian, founded a church in Southern California, and devoted much of his life to ministry. He also authored several books reflecting on faith, fame, and personal struggle, leaving behind a legacy of honesty, resilience, and lasting cultural impact.
